What is Zakat?

Islam has five pillars of faith, including Zakat — mentioned over 30 times in the Quran and an obligatory act for Muslims. Zakat of 2.5% is paid on surplus wealth left after the passage of a year.

Its primary motive is religious and spiritual, encouraging brotherhood with less fortunate members of society. Economically it discourages hoarding and helps redistribute wealth from the rich to the poor.

Zakat-eligible categories

  • The poor

    People with little or no possessions or income who need essential support.

  • The needy

    Those who do not have enough for themselves and their dependents — without sufficient savings, salary, business, or compulsory support.

  • The debtors

    Individuals burdened by debt they cannot repay, who deserve help to clear what they owe.

  • Wayfarers

    Travellers stranded mid-journey without provisions, who need support to complete their travel.

Administration of Zakat

Our Zakat policy gives clear guidance and transparency in collection and disbursement, in line with Islamic principles, for the charity and donors.

  • Depending on selection made by the donor (restricted/unrestricted), funds support specific projects or Zakat-eligible work more broadly.
  • Funds are disbursed to support Muslims in countries where we operate.
  • Zakat funds are used within one lunar year.
  • Zakat funds are deposited in riba-free accounts.
  • Zakat is not distributed to members of your immediate family such as spouse, children, parents, or grandparents.
  • Zakat funds are not used for running costs and overheads of schools, mosques, etc.
  • 10% of Zakat donations may be charged as an admin and project management fee.

Restricted Zakat fund

Funds with donor-defined restrictions for use in specific projects or countries only.

Unrestricted Zakat funds

Spent at the discretion of the trustees to further any of the charity’s purposes.
